Task-Switching and Working-Memory Exercise
Context
You will simulate a classic cognitive control task that requires rapid switching between two simple stimulus–response (S–R) rules. This assesses how you manage switch costs, interference, and error recovery while maintaining speed and accuracy.
Task
-
Stimuli: An alternating stream of single digits (0–9) and colored shapes (e.g., red triangle, blue square).
-
Responses:
-
For digits → say "even" or "odd" (note: 0 is even).
-
For shapes → say the color name (e.g., "red", "blue").
-
Instruction: Respond as rapidly and accurately as possible.
If no live stream is available, simulate a short run (e.g., 12–16 trials) that alternates digit → shape → digit → shape, etc., and provide your responses.
After the Run
-
Explain concrete strategies you used to:
-
Minimize task-switch costs
-
Manage working-memory interference
-
Recover from errors
-
Propose a two-week practice plan with:
-
Specific drills and progression
-
Rest intervals
-
Metrics and targets (reaction time and accuracy)
