Atlassian Senior Frontend Engineer Interview Experience — 20 Minutes of Coding, 10 of System Design, Rejected

A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn and that's how I got this interview. Right after we talked, the interview invitation came the same day. The recruiter was extremely efficient.

I just wanted to get in as fast as possible, so I only gave myself one week to prepare. Not being well prepared was also one of the reasons I failed later. I booked a technical screen for a week out. You can use your own local IDE, but you have to turn off all AI features, and the interviewer makes you share your screen so they can check your settings. Here are the questions:

The coding question is very similar to another frontend interview report on here. You are given a list of feeds (like a Twitter feed), and each feed has feed_text, feed_id and createdAt. You have to implement a six-cell grid layout, 2 rows by 3 columns (grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr) is the optimal solution, and I really hadn't prepared for that, so annoying).

Step one is to render the layout with static data first. Step two is to fetch the feeds from the given API and populate the layout. Along the way the interviewer asks which React hooks you have used and how you use them.

The key thing is that time is really tight. If you write something wrong, there is no time to fix it. 20 minutes of coding plus 10 minutes of system design is already fast-paced enough.

System design: there is a search input with a grid below it showing a product catalog. They ask how you would design it and what the component tree looks like. The number of product catalog results is unlimited, and they ask how you would make sure results come back quickly after the user types a search term, and how the filtering stays fast. Since I hadn't finished the coding part, I had no heart left to talk about system design.

Hope this helps anyone who needs it.
