A recruiter from this company reached out to me directly on LinkedIn — not a staffing agency. After the recruiter call, we scheduled a phone screen. Side rant: I actually have this credit card myself, and the Android app is painfully slow. They basically survive by hoodwinking Wells Fargo and their investors. Anyway, after replying on LinkedIn we set up an intro call, and this recruiter also emailed me prep materials — a PDF with his own headshot in it, a self-introduction, and even a bit about his hobbies. There was also guidance on how to prepare for the so-called interview. I get that the job market is rough right now, but does the recruiter really need to go this hard? Is this a job interview or a dating profile? Anyway, on the intro call I talked up the company a bit and got the phone screen.
The interviewer was pretty nice, but he had an accent and there were some words I genuinely couldn't make out. Since it was Java code, he kept saying "method," and I had to ask him to repeat it several times before I understood what he meant... Anyway, he was a nice guy, and he was engaging while I was coding — he'd ask me to walk through my thinking and nudge me toward what to consider. There were three failing unit tests, and you had to fix the code in three places to get them all passing. There was also a CSV file, and you had to figure out how to identify the merchant code — if it was a restaurant, you'd get triple points. One thing to note: the SQL query they gave you already returned some results. I initially wanted to write logic in the code to merge things, but the interviewer pointed out that it would be easier to just modify the query directly, and he let me google the syntax for a certain SQL function. In the end I got it working — all the unit tests passed. But a few days later the recruiter told me I didn't pass. Fine, I'll just keep milking the rewards on your credit card then.
