BNSF Software Engineer Interview Experience — One-Hour Technical Screen, Coding Then Design

BNSF·Software Engineer·Sep 2026
Technical Screenmedium

The technical interview was one hour, split into two parts: the first half was writing a program, the second half was design.

The problem was provided through a markdown file. It was a requirements doc for a REST API, roughly a price quote (rate inquiry) endpoint for some kind of railway freight, with other dependent services and database access operations involved. I was asked to write a sample program that expresses the endpoint's logic at the service layer.

For the design part, the question was: if this quote endpoint gets very high traffic, and the dependent services can have high latency, what architecture would you design to improve the quality of service?

On the downside of the interview experience: there was no code sharing tool provided, and no platform for system design either, so the interviewee has to share their own screen or provide a link to a third-party platform.
