This is a secondhand account: I am summarizing another person's report, not interviews I attended.
The report described a backend engineer with about four years of experience, working at a New York fintech company for roughly USD 160,000 total compensation. Recruiter outreach led to a recruiter conversation, an interval-focused phone interview, and six final rounds: three coding interviews, system design, project discussion, and values.
Coding covered duplicate transactions, graph traversal, and manual string parsing. The engineer reportedly struggled with floating-point boundaries, hesitated over traversal choices, and disliked manual parsing. The design discussion concerned notifications when limit orders filled, with questions about fanout, ordering, slow consumers, and failures.
The values round asked about opposing a technical decision under deadline pressure. The engineer felt the answer became too long and was particularly uneasy about that round. The account described five to six weeks of preparation and did not give a final hiring decision.
