This was the first technical phone screen of this job-hopping season for me. It was with an AI video creation company based in New York — funny enough, it has the same name as a legendary NYC clubbing spot lol.
I definitely hadn't grinded enough problems, because all they asked was a SQL question and I was scratching my head the whole time writing it. I'm sure I bombed it — I could feel the interviewer's face turning green as I struggled.
The question hit right on my long-standing weak spot: a recommendation-style problem. It was basically Spotify's classic question — find pairs of friends to recommend to each other if they overlapped on more than three of the same songs listened to on the same day.
I really think this kind of join / anti-join problem needs a lot more practice. I wrote a terrible solution.
After that I barely had any time left for the case study, so I just answered it half-heartedly. The question was: if you wanted to raise the price of the video editing software, how would you analyze it, how would you approach it, how would you design the experiment?
Because I was so short on time, the case study portion only lasted about ten minutes, and I think the interviewer had probably already mentally written me off by that point.
Gonna keep grinding. Long road ahead.
