I felt pretty good about the first round, but I still got rejected. Thinking back on it, I think it's because I didn't give the optimal solution to a brainteaser. Investment companies like this one seem to care a lot about that. So I'm posting this for anyone who interviews here after me.
The first round was with a department head. The interview was made up of a lot of small questions — a few short coding questions where you didn't need to run test cases, but you did need to write out complete code, roughly easy-to-medium LeetCode level. They also asked Java trivia questions, a probability question, and SQL trivia questions. There was one brainteaser, and that's probably what I failed on.
The brainteaser was:
Four people need to cross a bridge, and there is one flashlight. Each person takes a different amount of time to cross. At most two people can cross at once, and whoever crosses must carry the flashlight. When two people cross together, the crossing time is determined by whoever is slower. Given the four people's crossing times, find the minimum total time to get everyone across. You do not need to write an algorithm — just give the answer and explain your reasoning.
