Instacart Software Engineer Interview Experience — Four-Round Virtual Onsite, Shopping Cart and Equations Coding

There were 4 rounds in total.

Round 1, coding: the shopping cart problem (it's all over the forum already). The third part of this one was a bit confusing, because it said it's not just about putting frozen items last, the relative distance between aisles also has to be close, mainly to reduce the shopper's total pickup distance. I didn't have time to write the third follow-up at all, so I don't know whether this is where I get rejected.

Round 2, coding: calculate equations. For the third part, you only have to worry about cycle detection, and if you use topological sort or DFS it should be pretty easy. The inputs for all three parts are guaranteed to be valid, so there's no need to worry about input validation.

In both coding rounds you don't have to write your own test cases. The tests are already written, you just run them.

Round 3: system design, an inventory problem, the same as what people discussed on the forum.

Round 4: bar raiser. They asked about my recent projects and had me walk through the whole thing, with all kinds of tradeoffs and so on.
