Intuit Software Engineer Interview Experience — Phone Screen With an AI Prompting Round, Then Silence

Got a reach-out from HR two weeks ago and scheduled it.

The phone screen was 45 minutes of algorithms + 30 minutes of AI conversation Q&A, all in one call.

45 min algorithms:

  1. One medium-difficulty problem
  2. One easy problem — basically detecting in a React environment whether user input is a valid palindrome

30 min AI:
Mainly about whether you know how to use current gen AI tools and whether you can actually get the answer you want out of them — they ask how you'd prompt, how you'd get the ideal response, e.g. if I only want a JSON as the response from a GPT API call, how would I do that, that kind of thing.

The interviewer was a nice person. I got through all the algorithm problems, and when we talked about AI he also said my approach was correct. He also told me what the next round would cover (said there's still an AI assessment) and how I should prepare for it.

The most ridiculous part: today I asked HR for feedback and got no response at all, then got a rejection email and have no idea why I was rejected. Not sure if it's some KPI thing, or if they do the technical round first and screen resumes afterward.

Honestly it was just a waste of time, because when HR scheduled the interview they said I should ideally memorize some ML/AI fundamentals, so I spent a lot of time on that too...
