Backstory
Two earlier Meta attempts had ended in failure, so going into round three I was sure I had to change my whole approach and be much more systematic. Looking back, those misses pointed at the same gaps: my prep was shallow and I hadn't kept it steady.
Preparation
This time I committed roughly three months to getting ready properly. The plan came down to two things:
LeetCode mediums and hards, leaning on the problems tagged for Meta
Separate study material just for the system design side
Between the two, I felt far more prepared and a lot more confident than I had on either previous try.
Interview Process
The loop was the standard Meta format, made up of:
- Two coding interviews
- One system design interview
- One behavioral interview
Everyone I talked to was friendly, clearly knew the material, and acted professionally, so it was an enjoyable experience overall.
Most of the rounds went well, which I put down to the work I'd done beforehand. The exception was one coding round. My interviewer seemed fairly new, and the two of us misunderstood each other on the opening problem. Sorting out what it was actually asking ate up much of the session, so I had almost no time left for the follow-up question. I still got through both problems, but I was rushing on the second one and its solution had a handful of bugs.
What I’d tell other candidates
- Begin early and stay consistent, particularly when it's not your first attempt
- Spend your practice time on LeetCode mediums and hards that are tagged for Meta
- Take system design seriously instead of treating it as an afterthought
- In coding rounds, make sure the problem statement is nailed down at the start so confusion doesn't creep in later
- If things go off the rails, stay composed, since flexibility is part of what they look for
Final thoughts
Whatever the final result turns out to be, of all my Meta interviews this is the one where I was best prepared, most confident, and performed the strongest. I really did feel ready when I walked in.
Hopefully this is useful to anyone gearing up for a Meta interview. Best of luck, and keep going!
