Microsoft Data Scientist Interview Experience — Four Weeks of Email Chaos, Then the Position Was Filled

Sharing a bizarre experience today: the Microsoft interviewer couldn't receive Gmail emails.

I got notified four weeks ago for a coding screen round. I needed to provide 5 interview windows, so I replied, and then... nothing.

I waited three days, followed up, and the interviewer said she never received my last email — checked her spam folder too, nothing there. But this one she got. So I gave new dates and times again, and then again, no follow-up.

Contacted again, and again she said she didn't receive the previous one.

It kept switching back and forth like this between "received" and "not received" several times. On top of that, the interviewer also went on vacation a few more times. I endured four weeks of this and the interview was finally scheduled for the following Monday — then on Friday they told me the position was filled.

A few bizarre things about this:

  • No HR reached out the entire time — the interviewer emailed me directly herself, and she was a senior DS.
  • Gmail couldn't reliably communicate with Microsoft's corporate email.

Not sure if anyone else has run into this kind of bizarre situation.

One small piece of advice: if you're contacting MS, it's best to use an Outlook email. I eventually switched to Outlook and things stabilized after that, but by then it was too late.
