OpenAI Software Engineer Interview Experience — Fault-Tolerant Queue Coding and Online Devbox Design Phone Screens

I interviewed last week. After work I prepared on and off for over a month, and I went through basically all the questions on the forum.

The phone screen was two rounds, one coding and one design.

The coding question was a fault tolerant queue. I had to implement enqueue, reserve, fail and a DLQ, and they gave unit tests that all had to pass.

The first part went fairly smoothly and all the tests passed. For the second part, dependencies were added between tasks. I had an idea, but my code got a bit messy, and in the end there were a few tests I did not have time to debug. Thinking back after the interview, the problem itself really is not hard. I was just way too worried about the result, got nervous, and sabotaged myself.

The design round was an online devbox. The conversation was so-so, and I felt I did not hit the point.

Now I am waiting for the result. For anyone who has passed this interview: if you did not fully pass the second part, is there usually still a chance?
