Shopify Data Scientist Interview Experience — A Long Process Built Around CEO Philosophy and a No-Calculator Math OA

Mainly want to complain about how bad the experience was with Shopify's interview process. TL;DR: it dragged on forever and had way too many rounds.

Recruiter call -- they reached out to me first and spent the call selling their own company, selling the CEO's philosophy. I don't know if they genuinely believe in these lofty ideals or what, but it came across as unfriendly and really nitpicky. They said they were looking for a candidate whose philosophy matched theirs exactly, and this was even a general hire, so the requirements were excessive... They sent over a pile of links they wanted me to read. Up to this point it was still fine -- after reading them I did think the company was seriously innovative -- but the nightmare came after.

Online assessment: this turned out to be the kind of math questions where you're not allowed to use a calculator... plus spot-the-difference / find-the-matching-shape picture puzzles... and also a working style and personality assessment.... fine.

HR call: right off the bat they asked what I thought of the article link they'd emailed me about their interview process... you absolutely have to go read it, they genuinely expect you to have an opinion on it, and then it was one soul-searching question after another, with a bunch more philosophy talk...
