Software Engineer Interview Experience — AI-Assisted Coding and a Task-Scheduler Design

·Software Engineer·Sep 2026
Onsitemedium

The report covers three consecutive onsite sessions: AI-assisted coding, behavioral discussion, and system design. The coding task involved a worker consuming queued jobs, retrying failures with increasing delays, and diverting repeatedly unsuccessful jobs. Although the author considered the underlying problem simple, they struggled to understand the interviewer’s expectations. The interviewer explained that prompting the AI and evaluating tradeoffs were central to the assessment.

The author found the coding tool slow and described awkward pauses while waiting for its responses. Behavioral questions focused heavily on using and checking AI at work. The system-design session addressed a task scheduler with limited scaling discussion; the author particularly appreciated that interviewer’s patience and clarifying questions. The applicant worried that the AI session might hurt their chances, but the report gives no hiring result.
