Waymo Senior Frontend Engineer Interview Experience — Rejected 30 Minutes After Pushing on the Process

I interviewed for a senior frontend engineer role, on the simulation team.

Probably not much help to most people but in case someone needs it.

Part 1 — I don't remember the exact details, but it was related to n-ary tree recursion. Roughly, if a node's value contains a certain substring, you need to remove the entire subtree. Return the filtered tree.

Part 2 was building a UI based on the above — render the filtered tree with correct indentation, and correctly display the tree's content based on the input value.

The VO (virtual onsite) had 4 rounds, all frontend focused.

They actually asked about Angular — my resume says React, but the interviewer only knew Angular. The task was to debug a piece of UI code and make corresponding fixes based on a few issues reported by users. Not too hard, but I couldn't really read the Angular syntax, so I could only talk at a high level and write some pseudocode.

A Promise-related coding question, pure TS/JS.

System design: design an AI chat model, frontend focused.

I had a pending offer in hand, so 2 days after the interview I pushed them on the process. 30 minutes later I was told I was not moving forward.

My personal feeling is there were probably two reasons.

More likely I fell in the second round — I had some small bugs while writing the code.

The JD said they wanted production-level Angular proficiency. Maybe they felt my background didn't match. But if it didn't match, why did the recruiter reach out in the first place... it also wasted my time preparing.

I feel like the other rounds went well — both the system design guy and the interviewer in the last round said they were looking forward to seeing me soon.

Last thing — a complaint about their HR. xWF is apparently some outsourced platform used across Google's system? Very unprofessional, basically doesn't reply to messages. Also, getting rejected 30 minutes after I pushed on the process felt a bit suspicious, but I'm moving on.
