Analyze the Mobile Apps You Rely On Every Day and What Makes Them Stick
Company: Microsoft
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
In a product interview, you are asked to name the apps on your phone that you open every day and to explain why you keep using each one. Answer as a product thinker: for each app, say what it does for you and why it has become part of your daily routine.
```hint Name the job and the moment
For each app, say which need it serves and what moment in your day sends you to it. Then ask why this particular app wins that moment over the alternatives.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Should I cover every app I open daily, or pick the three or four that are most interesting from a product point of view?
- Do built-in apps such as messaging, the phone dialer or the calendar count, or only apps I chose to install?
- Do you want me to stop at why I use them, or also point out what frustrates me in one of them?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A deliberate selection of a few apps that meet different needs (for example communication, planning and entertainment), rather than a tour of the whole home screen.
- For each app, the underlying need and the trigger that brings the candidate back, stated in user terms rather than "it's easy to use".
- Why this app beats its alternatives: network effects, integration with other tools, defaults, accumulated personal data, or plain quality.
- Honesty about habit versus value: telling apps that genuinely help apart from apps opened out of compulsion, and what that means for engagement metrics.
- A pattern drawn across the apps that shows how the candidate thinks about retention, plus at least one specific friction worth improving.
### Follow-up Questions
- Pick one of these apps and describe the single change you would make, including the metric that would show it worked.
- If all of these apps disappeared tomorrow, which would you replace first and which would you barely miss? What does that say about how each one keeps you?
- One app on your list holds you mainly through notifications or streaks. Is that healthy engagement, and how should its team tell the difference?
Overview: A beginner product sense question that asks candidates to name the mobile apps they open every day and explain what keeps them coming back. It tests whether a candidate can describe the user need, trigger and retention mechanics behind familiar products and spot a friction worth improving.
