Collaborating With and Helping an ML Engineer as an ML Infrastructure Engineer
Company: Faire
Role: Software Engineer
Category: Behavioral & Leadership
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Onsite
You are interviewing for a software engineer position on a machine learning infrastructure team. In the cross-functional collaboration round, the interviewer is a machine learning engineer, one of the people who use the infrastructure your team would build. They ask you to talk through how you would collaborate with them and how you would help them.
The prompt is open-ended. Treat the interviewer as a real internal customer: they can describe their work, react to your ideas and push back, and they are judging whether you would be a partner they want to work with.
```hint Start from their workflow
Before proposing anything, think about how an ML engineer gets from raw data to a model in production, and where shared infrastructure speeds that path up or gets in the way.
```
```hint Helping is more than building
Think about ways to help a customer besides shipping the feature they asked for, and about how you would know that your help made a difference.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Do you want to hear how I would work with you from here on, or examples of how I have worked with internal customers before?
- What does your work involve day to day: feature pipelines, training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring?
- What is most painful for you today when you use the platform?
- How many other teams depend on the same platform, and how are their requests prioritized?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- Discovery before solutions: learning the ML engineer's workflow, goals and pain points, and separating the stated request from the underlying problem
- Agreeing on scope, priorities and success measures, including how to say "not yet" when the roadmap cannot absorb a request
- A communication rhythm: designs shared early for feedback, progress updates, and honest notice of delays or breaking changes
- Help beyond features: documentation, working examples, migration support, debugging side by side, feedback channels
- Measuring whether the help worked, and at least one concrete past example told with situation, actions and result
### Follow-up Questions
- I need a capability by the end of the month, it would help only my team, and your roadmap is full. What do you do?
- A platform change from your team broke my training pipeline last night. Walk me through how you handle it with me.
- How would you find out whether the platform actually makes ML engineers more productive?
- I keep building my own workaround instead of using your platform. How do you respond?
Overview: A behavioral cross-functional collaboration question for a software engineer on a machine learning infrastructure team, posed by an ML engineer who uses the platform. It tests how you would discover an internal customer's needs, agree on priorities, communicate through changes and failures, and help them succeed.
