Design In-Title Skipping That Lets Streaming Viewers Jump Past Unwanted Scenes
Company: Netflix

Interview Round: Other
You are a product manager at a video streaming service. Design a skip feature for it. Here, skipping means jumping past a stretch of a show or movie while continuing to watch the rest of it; moving on to a different title is out of scope. The feature's goal is to make watching on the service as enjoyable as possible.
Explain whom you would design for, which problems you would solve, what you would build first and how you would know it worked.
```hint Why people want to skip
List the moments viewers want to get past and sort them: some recur in every episode and are the same for everyone, others depend on the viewer's taste or situation. The two kinds call for different solutions.
### Clarifying Questions
- Does the service show ads inside titles, and if so, is skipping ad breaks in scope or only skipping parts of the content?
- Which devices matter most here: TVs controlled with a remote, phones, or web browsers?
- What skipping controls exist today: a scrub bar, jump buttons of a fixed number of seconds, anything that recognizes specific segments?
- Do studio or licensing agreements limit how the service may change the way a title plays?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- The reasons viewers skip (recurring segments such as intros, recaps and credits; scenes a viewer finds slow or unpleasant; looking for a particular moment) and a justified choice of segment and use case
- Solutions mapped to those reasons and to how each device is controlled, especially a TV remote
- How the segment boundaries a feature relies on would be found across a large catalog, and what happens when they are wrong
- Prioritization with trade-offs, including the ways skipping can hurt enjoyment: missed plot, spoilers, creators' intent
- Metrics that reflect enjoyment rather than raw skip counts, with guardrails
### Follow-up Questions
- Skips per viewing hour rise after launch. How would you tell whether viewers are enjoying the service more or the content is getting worse?
- Should the player skip the intro automatically for someone who always skips it? How would you decide, and how would you test it?
- How would you handle episodes where a scene plays before the opening sequence, or where the opening sequence changes from episode to episode?
Overview: A product design exercise for a video streaming service: create a way for viewers to skip past parts of a show or movie, not the whole title, so watching is as enjoyable as possible. It tests segmentation, reasons for skipping, solutions that work with a TV remote, prioritization and enjoyment-focused metrics.
