Fitness Club App Concept: Target Users, Pain Points, Feature Priorities and Metrics
Company: Meta
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You are the product manager asked to create an app for a gym. Decide whom the app serves and what it should help them do, identify the problems those people run into, choose and prioritize the features for a first release, and explain how you would tell whether the app is succeeding.
```hint Follow one visit from start to finish
Trace a member's path from joining and paying, through deciding when to go, getting in the door, finding equipment and knowing what to do with it, to seeing progress afterwards. Pain points bunch up at a few of these moments, and different groups of people feel different ones.
### Clarifying Questions
- Is the client one independent gym, a chain with several locations, or are we building an app meant to work across many gyms?
- Is the app mainly for current members, for people deciding whether to join, for trainers and front-desk staff, or for the gym's managers?
- What kind of gym is it: a large club built around weights and machines, a studio that sells classes, or a low-cost facility open around the clock?
- What does the business most need the app to change: fewer membership cancellations, more new sign-ups, more sales of extras such as personal training, or less front-desk work?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A goal for the app tied to how the gym makes money, with a clear view of which business outcome the app should move.
- A segmentation of the people the app could serve and a reasoned choice of one primary segment.
- Pain points across the visit journey for that segment, matched with solutions whose cost is realistic for a gym, including whether they need new hardware in every location.
- A prioritized first release, with the reasons some ideas are deferred or dropped.
- A north-star metric with supporting and guardrail metrics, plus risks such as low use after download and the privacy of body and location data.
### Follow-up Questions
- Many gym apps are installed at sign-up and then ignored. What would bring members back to this one every week?
- The owner asks for live availability of every machine. How would you weigh that request against its cost and accuracy?
- How would you show that the app reduces cancellations, rather than simply being used by members who were going to stay anyway?
Overview: A product sense question asking a PM candidate to create an app for a gym: choose who it serves, map their problems across a gym visit, prioritize features for a first release, and set success metrics. It tests segmentation, prioritization and linking features to how a gym keeps its members.
