Healthcare Product Design: Improving Patient Access to and Contact With Doctors
Company: Meta
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design a product that makes the connection between people and their doctors work better. Explain who you would build it for, what you would ship first, and how you would know it is working.
```hint Choose one moment of care
Connecting with a doctor covers finding the right one, getting seen, and staying in touch between visits. Pick the moment where your chosen users struggle most before you list any features.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Is this a Meta product that can build on Facebook, Messenger or WhatsApp, or a standalone product starting with no users?
- Does "connect" mean discovering and booking a doctor, consulting remotely, or ongoing contact between visits, or is that choice mine?
- Which country should I design for, given that doctor licensing, how care is paid for, and health-data rules all differ by market?
- Should doctors and clinics be a user group I design for, or only the supply that patients reach?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A deliberate choice of segment (for example people with ongoing conditions, caregivers, or people looking for a new doctor) and of the stage of the care journey being fixed, with the reasoning
- Pain points grounded in that segment, on both the patient side and the doctor side of the interaction
- A prioritized first release that solves the cold start of needing both verified doctors and patients for them to serve
- A success metric tied to a completed, useful patient-doctor interaction rather than time spent, with care-quality and privacy guardrails
- Health-specific risks: privacy and regulation, doctor verification and liability, emergencies arriving through the wrong channel, and whether users trust the company holding their medical information
### Follow-up Questions
- How would you verify that every doctor on the product is licensed, and keep that verification current?
- If Meta built this, what would you commit to about health data and advertising so that patients trust it?
- Doctors join but report that patient messages are eating their evenings. What do you change?
Overview: A product design interview question asking candidates to design a product that improves how people connect with doctors. It tests choosing a patient or doctor segment and a stage of the care journey, prioritizing a first release that serves both patients and doctors, and defining success metrics while handling privacy, verification and regulatory risk.
