PM Behavioral: Walk Through Diagnosing and Fixing a Hard Technical Issue
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Behavioral & Leadership
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
In a product manager interview at Google, you are asked to describe a technical problem you ran into at work and to walk through, in detail, how you solved it.
Answer with one real situation from your own experience. The interviewer wants to understand what was broken or hard and why, how you found the cause, which options you weighed, what you decided, how you confirmed the fix worked, and what you took away from it.
```hint Pick a problem you can explain two levels deep
Choose an issue whose mechanics you understood well enough to explain the root cause to an engineer and the impact to an executive, and where your own decisions, not only the engineers' work, shaped the fix.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Should the problem be one I fixed hands-on, or is one where I led engineers to the fix acceptable for a product manager role?
- What counts as technical here: a defect or outage, a performance or scaling limit, a data or access-permission issue, or a hard architecture decision?
- How much technical detail do you want: the system components and root cause, or mainly the reasoning and trade-offs?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A genuinely technical problem with clear stakes for users or the business, explained so a mixed audience can follow it
- How the root cause was isolated: the evidence gathered, the hypotheses ruled out, and who was involved
- The options considered and the trade-offs behind the chosen fix, including what was given up
- The candidate's own role and decisions, kept distinct from the engineering team's work
- How the fix was validated and rolled out, the measured outcome, and the lesson carried forward
### Follow-up Questions
- Which fix did you reject, and under what conditions would it have been the better choice?
- How did you confirm the fix worked without breaking other users or systems?
- If the lead engineer had disagreed with your diagnosis, how would you have resolved it?
Overview: A Google product manager behavioral prompt that asks you to recount a technical problem from your own work and walk through how you diagnosed and resolved it. It tests technical depth, structured problem solving, how you partner with engineers, and how you validate a fix and weigh trade-offs.
