Product Sense: Building a Credit Card Program From Approval to Repayment
Company: Stripe
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design a credit card system. Approach it as a product problem: decide whose needs the design serves, which users you target and what problems they have today, what the card and its end-to-end experience should look like, and how you would prioritize features and measure success.
```hint Map the parties first
A card payment involves the cardholder, the merchant and several companies in between, each with different needs and revenue. Lay them out, choose whose problem you are solving, and only then pick a user segment.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Are we designing a card that people or businesses carry and spend with, or the platform that lets other companies issue and run their own cards?
- Is there a target audience in mind, for example people with little or no credit history, frequent travelers, or small online businesses?
- Which country are we launching in, given that credit rules, card fees and payment habits differ by market?
- What does success mean for the business: accounts opened, spend on the card, revenue, or growth with credit losses held to a limit?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A map of the parties in a card transaction and how money flows between them, with a reasoned choice of whose problem the design solves.
- A specific user segment with concrete pain points across getting, using and paying off the card.
- A prioritized feature set covering the lifecycle: application and approval, credit limits, spending and controls, repayment, disputes and fraud protection.
- The business model and its risks: interchange, interest and fees weighed against credit losses, fraud, rewards cost and regulation.
- Success metrics with guardrails such as delinquency, fraud losses and complaints.
### Follow-up Questions
- How would you set the first credit limit for an applicant with almost no credit history, and how would it change over time?
- Rewards drive spending but cost money. How would you decide whether to offer them at launch?
- Late payments in the first cohort come in well above plan. What would you look at first, and what would you change?
Overview: A product design prompt for product manager interviews that asks for a credit card system. It tests mapping the parties in a card payment, choosing a target segment, designing the experience from application to repayment, and weighing credit risk, fraud, the business model and success metrics.
