Raising US Fruit Intake: Pick a Segment, Find the Barrier, Design the Product
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design a product whose purpose is to get people in the United States to eat more fruit.
Explain why the product should exist, whom you would build it for, what keeps those people from eating more fruit today, what you would build first and how you would measure whether it works.
```hint Find the real barrier
People skip fruit for different reasons, such as price, access, spoilage, taste, habit or the effort of preparing it. Pick one group and pin down its biggest barrier before you sketch any features.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Why do we want more fruit eaten: better health outcomes, or more sales for growers and grocers? The answer changes what success means.
- Must the product be digital, or could it be a physical product, a service, or a program run with schools or grocery stores?
- What counts as fruit: fresh, frozen, canned and dried fruit, and does fruit juice count?
- Is Google building this, so it could draw on Search, Maps, Android or Fitbit, or is it a standalone product?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clarified goal and a measurable definition of "eating more fruit"
- US consumer segments with the barriers specific to each, and a justified choice of one
- Solutions mapped to that segment's top barrier, prioritized by impact and effort, with a concrete first version
- Metrics that track fruit actually eaten rather than only app engagement, plus guardrails
- Risks such as self-reported data, reaching households with less money or access, sugary substitutes, and privacy when children are involved
### Follow-up Questions
- How would you know people ate more fruit and did not just log more of it?
- If you focused on children, how would the product handle parental consent and the fact that parents buy the groceries?
- Fresh fruit is expensive or hard to find in some neighborhoods. How would your design change for those households?
Overview: A product sense question asking for a product that gets people in the United States to eat more fruit. It tests how a PM clarifies the goal, segments consumers by what keeps them from eating fruit, designs and prioritizes a first version for one group, and measures real changes in eating.
