Root Causes and Fixes for an Unsold Grocery Brand With Stock Nearing Expiry
Company: Amazon
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product / Decision Making
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You are a product manager responsible for a retailer's grocery category. One brand in the category is not selling, and much of its remaining stock will reach its expiry date soon. Identify every plausible reason the brand is not selling, and for each reason propose a remedy, bearing in mind that the stock on hand is running out of time.
```hint Narrow it down first
Before brainstorming, find out whether the slowdown is unique to this brand or shared across the category, and whether the brand ever sold well here. Each answer rules whole families of causes in or out.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Is this an online grocery storefront, physical stores, or both, and does the retailer own the stock or do third-party sellers?
- Did the brand sell well before and then stall, or has it barely sold since it was listed? Are other brands in the category also slowing?
- How much stock is on hand, how many days remain before it expires, and what is the current daily sales rate?
- What kind of product is it (fresh, chilled or shelf-stable), since that limits both the time available and the ways to move it?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- Clarification of the channel, the timeline and the scope of the slowdown before any causes are listed
- A structured, non-overlapping set of causes that covers both the shopper's path to purchase and factors outside it, rather than a flat brainstorm
- For each cause, the evidence that would confirm or rule it out, and a remedy matched to that cause
- Remedies that cover both the stock nearing expiry and the underlying problem, with their cost and the value they recover
- A priority order for checks and actions, set by the expiry deadline
### Follow-up Questions
- If you could look at only one data source today, which would it be, and which causes would it confirm or rule out?
- How would you choose between discounting, bundling, returning the stock to the supplier and donating it?
- What alert would you set up so the category team spots the next slow-moving brand well before expiry becomes a problem?
Overview: A product manager must work out why one grocery brand is not selling while its stock nears its expiry date. The prompt tests structured root-cause analysis across discovery, pricing, purchase, demand and buying decisions, matching a remedy to each cause, and acting against a hard deadline.
