Taking an AI Feature From Idea to Launch: PM Ownership Story
Company: Internet Brands
Role: Product Manager
Category: Behavioral & Leadership
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Describe an AI-powered product or feature that you helped take from idea to launch. Walk the interviewer through what it did, the part you personally owned, and how you got it out the door.
```hint Show the decisions that exist only because it is AI
Beyond the usual launch story, the interviewer wants to hear how you defined "good enough" for the model's output, what happened when the model was wrong, and how that shaped the rollout.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Does a classic machine learning feature (ranking, recommendations, fraud or spam scoring) count, or should the story be about a generative AI product built on a large language model?
- Should the story stop at launch, or also cover how the model's quality was tuned once real users had it?
- If I worked on the AI feature as one member of a larger team, should I focus only on the decisions I owned rather than the overall project?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- The user problem, the evidence for it, and why an AI approach beat a rules-based or manual alternative
- The candidate's own decisions, clearly separated from the work of the ML and engineering partners
- How quality was defined and measured before launch, and the bar that gated shipping
- How the team handled model failure modes (wrong or harmful output, bias, privacy, latency, inference cost) and staged the rollout
- Measured results against a baseline, and what the candidate learned or changed afterward
### Follow-up Questions
- What did the model get wrong once real users had it, how did you find out, and what did you change?
- Who decided the quality bar was high enough to ship, and what would have made you delay the launch?
- How did the cost of running the model per request affect the product design or the business case?
Overview: A behavioral product manager interview question asking the candidate to describe an AI-powered product or feature they helped launch. It tests personal ownership, how model quality was defined and measured, handling of model failure modes and rollout risk, and the measured outcome after launch.
