Visualize Data in a Monitoring System

A fleet dashboard must show where a problem is concentrated without making operators inspect every host. This lesson uses a heat map to group related components and make gaps in health data visible.

At fleet scale, one chart per server becomes hard to scan. A heat map can compress many observations into a shared view, provided its grouping and state definitions remain clear.

A heat map visualizes data magnitude in two dimensions using color intensity.

Using heat maps to troubleshoot

Group cells by a useful relationship, such as data center, cluster, rack, or service. A contiguous patch of failures then suggests a shared dependency worth investigating. It does not, by itself, identify the cause.

In this example, each cell represents one component. The green and red states distinguish a successful health check from repeated nonresponse. Nonresponse can mean a failed host, a broken path, or a failed collector. A production view also needs an explicit unknown or stale state, text counts, and a legend so color is not the only way to interpret it.
