System Design: Distributed Logging

Logging

A log record describes an event in an application or service. Records may be written to files, standard streams, or a collection service. Useful entries identify what happened, where it happened, and enough context to investigate it.

A paper roll with ruled entries introduces logs.
Keep a record of events

Need for logging

Logs provide evidence for investigating failures and security incidents. Their value depends on the events recorded, the context attached, and whether those records survive the failure being investigated.
