System Design: Twitter
Design a microblogging service with posts, follows, timelines, search, and high-volume interactions. The chapter uses the historical Twitter name because its engineering examples come from that period; the proposed architecture is not a current inventory of X.
In this case study, users publish short posts called tweets and interact through likes, replies, and reposts. The design must handle both ordinary traffic and sudden attention to a popular post. A small number of accounts can create much more work than the average account.
