The first round was a 55-minute interview. From my own digging before the interview, I figured out that the person interviewing me was the Hiring Manager.
The first half was just chatting with them. Every Apple interview I've done so far has been like this.
The last 20-some minutes were some high-level design questions. This team does management and maintenance of infra, and the question was very simple: basically, if you're on the cloud provider's side and want to provision a resource with Terraform, what do you need to do? The answer is just ordinary CRUD, plus polling to get the status after the command is sent. But at the time I didn't really understand what they were asking, so I didn't answer it well.
After that there was time for me to ask them questions. The questions the candidate asks are probably an important part of the scoring too. There was one question that I later felt I hadn't described well, but I never corrected it, and in the end I didn't pass. I waited about two weeks to hear back.
Overall this round actually wasn't stressful. The interviewer doesn't ask very deep questions; being able to clearly explain your thinking and your personal qualities matters more. By comparison, the AI Inference startup I interviewed with before really required solid fundamentals.
