Chainlink Labs Software Engineer Interview Experience — Recruiter Screen Goes Cagey Over Comp Questions

I'm based in Canada. I mass-applied online and a recruiter set up an intro call.

The recruiter was late first, then asked a few questions: self-introduction, tech stack, why I'm looking for a job, the project I was most proud of in the past year, how I handle burnout, how I communicate with the team when remote, and whether I'm really into blockchain / have been following it closely.

Maybe it was because when I answered the last question I said "years ago when blockchain first got hot I was curious so I looked into it, but I haven't been following the latest developments closely lately" and that didn't sit well with him? Or maybe he wasn't happy with my answers to the other questions either. Either way, after that he got cagey and kept dodging.

He barely introduced the company or the role.

When going over the interview process he said, "1-hour HM call. After that there will be a technical round." I asked, "Is the technical round just one round of coding?" (I thought he meant an OA.) He replied, "oh there are many rounds." He didn't say what they all were, said he'd brief me on that after the HM round.

The job posting didn't list compensation, so I asked about it. At first he said we're not discussing that now, it'd come after the HM call. Then he said it varies by geographic location. So I asked, does my location not even get a range? He finally, reluctantly, said: midpoint TC 375k. I kept pressing, and he eventually said base 215k.

I'm guessing he figured I wasn't going to get an offer anyway and didn't want to reveal too much. Guys, I did my best to pry the info out of him.

Before the intro call I'd checked Glassdoor reviews, and lately it's been almost all 1- and 2-star. Combined with him asking about burnout and how I'd communicate remotely, that felt like a bit of a red flag too. This was really just meant to be practice for me anyway, so I guess there's probably no chance now.
