I interviewed for the Databricks MLE role in September. The first round, a tech screen, was software engineering system design. Databricks is a general hire, so I suspect the MLE and SWE versions of this round have the same requirements. I failed badly.
The question was the "design a messaging app" one that shows up all the time in interview write-ups. Specifically:
Design a messaging app that supports:
- user can send a new message to recipient or recipients;
- user can retrieve chat history;
- user can delete a chat.
The app should store all messages internally.
Even though I prepared ahead of time, pure software engineering system design is still hard for me to explain in detail coming from an ML background. I still need to work harder 🙏
