DoorDash Software Engineer Interview Experience — An AI-Coding Onsite Round, Rejected After System Design

Screen interview: Code Craft: Dasher Pay. Didn't feel too hard — just make sure to talk through your approach with the interviewer before you start coding. It's a high-frequency question from the forum.

Onsite Round 1: Debugging: Round Robin Load Balancer. Also a forum question.

Onsite Round 2: AI Coding. They had me set up a microservice locally on my own machine, specifically to handle abnormal situations in DoorDash's order reports — things like partial delivery loss, total loss, and delays — and then decide how to handle each case: full refund or partial refund. This interview was very open-ended and very general. They didn't give specific requirements, just pointed me in a rough direction, and I had to figure out the requirements myself. They wanted you to use AI to actually build the microservice yourself so it runs and behaves as expected, so I'd recommend having codex/Claude set up on your local machine before the interview, along with whatever IDE you're comfortable with.

Onsite Round 3: System Design: Food Review System with Reward Bonus. Also a forum question.

In the end I got rejected. The overall interview experience was decent. My guess is that I didn't prepare enough for the system design round and answered some of the questions poorly. My advice: for system design, go over it multiple times yourself, go deeper into it, and have AI ask you more of the likely high-frequency questions.
