I went through an internship-style process where the first real step was a take-home design task focused on a Duolingo feature. It took a significant amount of time. It felt like something they expected me to work on from start to finish and turn into a polished presentation.
After I finished, the follow-up dragged on. The process went silent for a while, and I didn't receive a rejection until months after the initial application. When it finally arrived, it was a standard rejection with no meaningful closure.
What stayed with me was the imbalance. I put in a lot of unpaid work up front, but the process didn't turn that effort into a more thoughtful response. I still admired Duolingo as a brand, but the way things ended made me feel like the system was set up to extract ideas instead of seriously considering me.
