I interviewed for a backend focused role and was rejected after the system design round. The early stages weren't where the process ended. The later system design evaluation was the point at which I didn't make it through. The overall sequence matched what I'd heard from friends: a fairly consistent process that eventually led to the same system design stage.
That round felt high stakes. The earlier stages gave me enough time to show I could handle technical questions, but the system design interview was where the bar and expectations seemed to arrive all at once. I left feeling that I understood the scope, yet I still hadn't delivered what they wanted.
The result was especially disappointing because system design seemed to be a common point of rejection, including for other people who went through the same stage. My takeaway was that system design was treated as the deciding checkpoint in the process.
