Google Software Engineer Interview Experience — A Friendly BQ Round That Kept Digging Into Conflict and Ownership

The interviewer for this BQ round was very nice and friendly, and took notes the whole time. Overall it didn't feel like an interrogation, more like a logical conversation — they kept circling back around the same competency and probing deeper.

1. Disagree / Conflict

First asked: have you ever disagreed with someone. After I gave an example, they followed up asking how I generally deal with conflict. This one got probed pretty deep — they had me give more than one example, mainly listening for how I communicate and how I push things forward.

2. Different perspectives / Design decision

Asked: is there an example where different people had different perspectives that led to different design choices, and in the end those different opinions merged into a better design. This question felt like it was checking collaboration, design thinking, and whether you can absorb other people's opinions instead of just defending your own approach.

3. Priorities / Deadlines

Asked: what do you do if the deadline is very tight? What if you have multiple deadlines at once? More about time management and tradeoffs — whether you have a clear prioritization method, and whether you proactively communicate risk.

4. New year planning (fairly relaxed)

Asked what my personal plans were for the new year. I just talked about some everyday stuff, like working out, staying healthy, that kind of thing.

5. Scenario question (two-part comparison)

Scenario 1: tomorrow I'm starting a new project, but I notice a bug in another project on the team that isn't mine — how would I handle it?

Scenario 2: same setup, but the buggy project is my own; also this old project has no dependency with the new project I'm about to start — he asked what attitude and approach I'd take to handle it.

These two questions were mainly looking at ownership and judgment: when should you stop to fix a problem, when should you just sync with someone else, how do you balance a sense of responsibility against your current priorities.

6. Opinion on Google

Last question: what do you think Google, as a big company, could still do better in? This felt more like checking whether you have constructive thinking, rather than just complaining.
