OpenAI Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience — Two Phone Screen Rounds, a Typing Game Design and a Card Game, Rejected

Phone screen experience from last week, senior SWE.

The phone screen was two rounds, scheduled across two days.

Round 1 was system design. Design a multiplayer typing game, similar to designing online chess.

Round 2 was coding. Write a card game with 2 to n players, each holding 3 cards, with a few rules for comparing the hands. At the end, print who the winner is and what cards each player had. The card game that was posted here before focused on dealing the cards, but this one focused on comparing hands.

I wrote this round in Java, and by the time I finished I was almost out of time, so I never got to ask any follow-ups. Their coding has a much higher information density than other companies, and Java takes a huge amount of code to write.

As expected, I got rejected. There were some gaps in both rounds.

I read a lot of interview reports while preparing for this interview.
