Supermicro Software Engineer interview experience: coding, design, and bar-raiser loop

My path followed a formal Amazon-style interview loop after I applied, rather than a quick conversation. It was intense because it combined deep coding, several system-design discussions, object-oriented design, and a bar-raiser focus on leadership principles.

The coding questions ranged from medium to hard. I was expected to find an optimal solution, explain my reasoning, cover time and space complexity, and think through edge cases. Follow-ups asked for alternative approaches and trade-offs, so finishing an initial solution was not the end of the discussion.

In high-level design, I designed a scalable distributed system and covered API design, data modeling, database selection, caching, load balancing, fault tolerance, and consistency under high traffic. Low-level design had me create an object-oriented system from scratch, focusing on classes, relationships, patterns, extensibility, maintainability, and SOLID principles. The bar-raiser discussion asked for detailed STAR examples about ownership, conflict, learning from failures, and difficult technical decisions.

I did not receive an offer. The bar felt high in every dimension, especially engineering judgment and turning technical thinking into crisp explanations grounded in principles.

Location: Bengaluru. Overall feedback: Positive. Offer status: no offer.
