The American Mathematical Society Research Scientist interview experience: PI alignment and lab presentation

After an initial recruiter-style step, I had an online conversation with the PI about where my work could fit and what the existing project was doing. We discussed research areas we could realistically pursue together. It felt like an alignment conversation rather than a checklist interview.

That was followed by a presentation to the lab. I explained my previous and current experience so they could see how my abilities matched what they were planning. I was also asked hypotheticals about what I would do if something went off plan or an unexpected problem appeared in the middle of a project.

The tone was steady and collaborative, but the questions required more than familiarity. They wanted to understand how I would think under real constraints.

Location: Canada. Overall feedback: Neutral. Offer status: got offer.
