Volkswagen Group Italia Software Engineer Interview Experience: A five-day backend assignment and disorganized staffing coordination

A recruiter contacted me through LinkedIn even though I had not applied and, as far as I could tell, my profile was not in their pipeline. At first, they described it as a one-off interview and said they would keep my information for future opportunities even if I did not move forward. In reality, it lasted much longer and was hard to follow.

I went through HR screening and then met a Backend technical lead. That round went well, and I received a backend assignment due in five days. After I finished it, I met the same lead again to walk through my implementation and reasoning. That part felt professional and positive. Then communication broke down. Two staffing-side HR representatives contacted me, but they did not seem aligned on my stage or even on what had happened. After I pointed that out, I still did a frontend React technical interview.

The process eventually reached a Carrefour client interview. Before it, I had a preparation call with an account or commercial representative. It was the most unprofessional part of the run: she joined late and kept messaging during the call, making it hard to prepare. The client interview had two technical leads, one backend and one frontend, and it left me uneasy. I did not get an offer. Even though the technical work went well, the staffing coordination and client preparation overshadowed it.

Location: Rabat. Overall feedback: negative. Offer status: no offer.
