A Shared To-Do List Design and a Kafka Mistake

The system design question was the shared to-do list problem from the question bank. Unfortunately, I had not had time to prepare for it. This was also my first system design interview, so I did not perform very well. I made one critical mistake by adding a Kafka queue. That made the system asynchronous and would affect the speed of the synchronous flow. The interviewer still interacted with me t…

Phone Screen Piano Keys Coding Challenge

Phone Interview Coding/design question: Piano Keys Implement a UI with 6 piano keys (C, D, E, F, G, A) that responds to user input. Must be built with vanilla HTML/CSS/JavaScript only — no frameworks or third-party libraries. When a key is pressed and held, it should show a pressed state (i.e., add the pre-styled .key.active class to the corresponding element); when released, it should immediatel…

Roblox Software Engineer interview: challenging but relaxed Superday

After applying online, I took an online assessment built around game-style problem solving. The Superday itself was tough, though most interviewers were laid back and friendly. The technical side leaned heavily on numerous LeetCode-style questions in the medium-to-hard range. The behavioral questions were not just warmups. They were difficult enough that I had to be specific about how I would han…

Nailed the Case Study, Still Rejected After Round One

(QS 50-100 school, physics PhD, desperately job hunting.) First round, technical interview, 60 minutes. The interviewer asked about my resume for 5 to 10 minutes first (my own work also has some connection to DS). Then two simple pandas data-processing questions using a bit of basic statistical test knowledge. I didn't need to run test cases, I just had to make the interviewer understand my code.…

A Brutal OA With Robot-Building and Factory Games

First-time poster here. After I got the OA, I asked the career center for an extension but didn't get one, so I ended up squeezing it into one evening of Thanksgiving break, a week before finals deadlines. After I finished I felt like my English was terrible and my IQ had dropped :((( It seriously wrecked my mood for the rest of finals prep. 25 minutes building a robot car. There were two rounds…

A Four-Part OA With Two In-Platform Games

Roblox's DS summer intern OA has 4 parts: the first two parts are both playing games on Roblox's own platform, the third part is basically behavioral multiple choice, and the fourth part is coding. Part 1: a build-a-car game, 25 minutes total; 2 sections, 13 minutes each, and each section has two different terrains. You need to install different parts on a car to get through both terrains, and th…

One Technical Screen, a Rare Trie/Heap Question, No Offer

A bit unlucky — I ran into an interviewer for this round. At first I was pretty happy, thinking we might have something in common, but then I got the lowest-frequency, hardest question in the database, and I didn't finish it. I ended up failing. I'm not sure whether it was because of the coding, or my resume, or maybe just because I didn't finish the coding — either way, my feedback didn't stack…

Gamified Assessment and a Meta-Style Product Sense Case, No Offer

This application season I applied for Roblox's PhD DS Summer Intern position. I didn't end up passing, but I felt the team's overall background was pretty solid, and the assessment was a bit different from the usual, so I wanted to share it here. Timeline: 11/23/2024 — applied online, got the assessment the same day 12/19/2024 — submitted the assessment 02/12/2025 — HR reached out 02/27/2025 — vi…

An Onsite Derailed by a Disrespectful PM

Roblox is a really hot pre-IPO unicorn, and lately they're hiring a lot, so a lot of candidates are interviewing there. I get it, a lot of people want in, but I have to complain a bit — the experience was, if anything, worse than others I've seen on this board. After the IPO the stock will probably pop, but long-term it's genuinely hard to say. Phone screen 1: HM The hiring manager was pretty nic…

Digit-Grid Phone Screen, Then Resource Loader and Pub/Sub System Design Onsite

Engine-related role — all the questions were things I'd never seen anywhere on this forum before. Phone Screen: Phase 1 was an m*n grid where each cell holds a digit from 0-9. I had to collect every horizontal or vertical run of 3 or more matching digits and record each one in a results array, in the format [position, length], with the results ordered top-to-bottom and left-to-right. Phase 2 buil…

What are interview experiences?

An interview experience is a candidate's own account of a hiring loop — not a question bank entry. It tells you the shape of the process: how many rounds there were, what each round actually tested, how long the gaps between them ran, and what the recruiter said at the end. That context is the part a question list cannot give you.

How to read them

Weight recent write-ups more heavily — interview loops change, often within a year. Read several for the same company and role rather than one: a single account tells you what one interviewer asked, while five tell you what the bar is. Note the outcome badge too, since a rejection write-up usually explains the gap far more precisely than an offer one.

Share your own

Every published experience earns 50 XP, and each of the first 3 likes it receives in a day earns you 10 XP more. Likes must come from established accounts; like-for-like swaps and likes from your own second account are not paid. Write it while the details are fresh — the round order, the exact prompts, and how much time you were given are what the next reader needs.
