A Software Engineer at Known plays a critical role in bridging the gap between advanced data science, modern media strategies, and highly scalable technology products. As a engineered-product driven agency, Known relies on its engineering team to build proprietary software that optimizes advertising campaigns, manages massive datasets, and delivers real-time analytics. Whether you are developing highly responsive user interfaces or architecting robust backend pipelines, your work directly impacts how some of the world's largest brands interact with their audiences. In this role, you will contribute to core products that handle complex data processing, automated media buying, and machine learning integrations. For example, engineers on the product team frequently work with modern frontend frameworks like React to build intuitive, performance-oriented dashboards, while platform engineers design the microservices and data pipelines that power these interfaces. The engineering culture at Known is highly collaborative, requiring you to work closely with data scientists, product managers, and creative teams to translate complex business requirements into elegant technical solutions. The scale and complexity of the problem space make this position exceptionally rewarding. You will face challenges related to high-throughput data processing, state management in complex web applications, and system reliability.

PracHub editorial advice for the preparation topics above.
Manage your time actively during the deep dive
The 90-minute technical deep dive is comprehensive. Keep track of the time and ensure you do not get stuck on a single optimization. It is better to have a fully working solution with minor configuration needs than an incomplete algorithm.
Verify your environment beforehand
Ensure your local development environment, IDE, and build tools are fully updated and functional before the technical interview. Having a smooth setup prevents unnecessary stress and technical delays during live coding.
Communicate your design trade-offs
Whenever you make a technical decision, explain why you chose that approach. Discussing the pros and cons of your chosen architecture or state management strategy shows maturity and depth as an engineer.
Choose a category, try a prompt, then open its approach, worked solution or follow-up when you need it.

How do you approach database schema design when building a system that requires both rapid transactional write
How do you approach database schema design when building a system that requires both rapid transactional writes and complex analytical reads?
Approach
- Name the grain you start from and join outward from it.
- Check whether any join is one-to-many before aggregating, or the sums inflate.
- Say which index the query would use, and what makes it unusable.
- Handle the rows that do not match: that is usually the actual question.
Follow-up
- How does the query change if that join becomes one-to-many?
- What happens to this when the table is ten times larger?
Find version gaps and relay lag with window functions
outbox_event holds event_id, aggregate_type, aggregate_id, aggregate_version, event_type, payload, status ('pending','published','dead'), attempts, created_at, published_at. A projection is missing rows and you must decide whether the relay skipped events or the consumer dropped them. Write three queries over the last seven days: one listing every aggregate_id whose published aggregate_version sequence has a hole, one giving per-day counts with a running total, and one returning the newest published event per aggregate. For each, say where the window function is evaluated relative to WHERE and LIMIT. PostgreSQL 16.
Approach
- Gaps: compute lead(aggregate_version) OVER (PARTITION BY aggregate_id ORDER BY aggregate_version) in a subquery, then filter next_version <> aggregate_version + 1 in the outer query. Window functions are evaluated after WHERE, GROUP BY and HAVING and before the outer ORDER BY and LIMIT, so the predicate cannot sit in the same WHERE clause and PostgreSQL 16 has no QUALIFY.
- Say what the seven-day filter does to the answer: it truncates every partition, so the first row per aggregate has no predecessor inside the window and a hole spanning the boundary is invisible. Widen the window, or join to resource.version as the authority for the true maximum.
- Running total: SELECT date_trunc('day', created_at) AS d, count() AS n, sum(count()) OVER (ORDER BY date_trunc('day', created_at) ROWS UNBOUNDED PRECEDING). An aggregate inside a window call is legal because grouping runs before windowing. The grouping key is unique per row here so ROWS and RANGE agree, but write the frame anyway — over ungrouped rows with tied timestamps the default RANGE frame pulls in every peer row and the total jumps.
- Newest per aggregate: DISTINCT ON (aggregate_id) ... ORDER BY aggregate_id, aggregate_version DESC is the cheap PostgreSQL-only form when an index matches that order; row_number() OVER (PARTITION BY aggregate_id ORDER BY aggregate_version DESC) = 1 is the portable form and needs a subquery for the same evaluation-order reason as the gap query.
Follow-up
- Relay failover redelivers events. Does a duplicate break the gap query, and how would you detect one from this table alone?
- Turn the gap check into a continuous monitor rather than a query someone runs after an incident. What does it watch?

What is the typical timeline for the interview process at Known?
The entire process generally takes between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on interviewer availability and the candidate's schedule. Known aims to move candidates through the stages efficiently, though communication turnaround times can occasionally vary.
Known Software Engineer candidate reports ↗How technical is the 90-minute technical deep dive?
It is highly technical and hands-on. You will be expected to write actual code, solve structural problems, and configure environment settings. It is designed to mimic real-world development tasks rather than purely theoretical algorithmic puzzles.
Known Software Engineer candidate reports ↗What sets successful candidates apart during the interviews?
Successful candidates demonstrate not only strong coding skills but also a high degree of pragmatism. They communicate their thought process clearly, ask clarifying questions before writing code, and show that they care about the operational details, such as configuration and testing.
Known Software Engineer candidate reports ↗Is there flexibility in the choice of programming languages during the coding assessments?
For general software engineering roles, there is typically flexibility, though JavaScript and TypeScript are highly preferred, especially for frontend or full-stack positions. For specialized roles like a Product Engineer, React, you will be expected to complete the coding exercises using React and modern JavaScript.
Known Software Engineer candidate reports ↗What topics does Known test in interviews?
Known interviews most often cover Python, Data Science, Communication Skills, React (Product Engineer), and Software Engineering (Core Role). The exact emphasis depends on the specific role you apply for.
