Blue-Sky Strategy: How to Upend the Film Industry With No Budget Limits
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Suppose money, talent and technology are no object. How would you disrupt the movie and film industry?
Choose where in the industry you would strike, anywhere from how films are financed and made to how they reach audiences and how people watch them. Describe what you would build, how it would change the industry, how you would know it is working and what could still stop it.
```hint Money is not the only constraint
Unlimited resources remove the budget limit, but not the limits of talent, rights, audience habits and time. Look for the pain point that money and technology can actually remove and that today's incumbents cannot easily fix themselves.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Am I doing this as Google, able to use assets such as YouTube, Google TV and Google Cloud, or as a new company with unlimited funding?
- Does "disrupt" mean changing how films get made, how they reach audiences, how people watch them, or how the money flows to creators and investors?
- Which audience matters most: people who go to theaters, viewers watching at home, or audiences outside the largest film markets?
- Over what time horizon should the change happen: a few years, or a decade?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A map of the film value chain, from financing and production through distribution and theaters to discovery and viewing, with the main pain points of creators, studios, theaters and viewers.
- A justified choice of one or two points to attack, rather than spreading unlimited resources across everything.
- A concrete product or business model, and the reason incumbents could not simply copy it.
- Success measures for creators, audiences and the industry, and a phased path from first launch to broad change.
- The constraints money cannot remove: talent and union relations, rights and release windows, creative quality, regulation and trust in new production tools.
### Follow-up Questions
- With unlimited money, why not simply buy a major studio? What would that achieve, and what would it leave unchanged?
- How would actors, writers and crews react to your plan, and how would you win their support?
- What first-year signal would show the disruption is real rather than a well-funded experiment?
Overview: An open-ended product vision question asking how you would disrupt the movie and film industry if money, talent and technology were unlimited. It tests whether a candidate can map the film value chain, focus on the pain points worth attacking, propose a concrete product or business model and name the constraints money cannot remove.
