Describe cross-functional collaboration under time pressure
Company: Instacart
Role: Data Scientist
Category: Behavioral & Leadership
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Technical Screen
Tell me about a time you led a cross-functional initiative with ambiguous requirements and severe time pressure. The interviewer asked generic or shifting questions that risked derailing scope. In your answer, cover: (1) how you clarified the problem and forced prioritization (specific questions you asked and what you explicitly de-scoped); (2) how you aligned stakeholders (e.g., product, sales, engineering, legal) with a written decision doc or checkpoint agenda; (3) how you managed the meeting time to ensure critical questions were answered (tactics like parking lots, timeboxing, owner-by-owner Q&A); (4) a quantifiable outcome; and (5) what you would do differently next time to avoid running out of time and to surface hidden assumptions earlier.
Overview: This question evaluates leadership, cross-functional collaboration, stakeholder alignment, prioritization under ambiguity, and communication competencies relevant to a Data Scientist working with product, engineering, sales, and legal teams.
