Design a marketplace that matches students with tutors who fit their needs
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design a product that helps students and tutors find each other. Explain who you would build it for on each side, which of their problems you would solve first, what the core experience looks like from the first search to a recurring weekly session, and how you would know the product is working.
```hint Both sides must say yes
A match only happens when the student (or the parent who pays) and the tutor each believe the other is worth their time. Pick a segment narrow enough that you can name what each side needs to see before committing to a first session, and think about which side you have to attract first.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Which learners are in scope: school-age students whose parents choose and pay, university students, or adults learning a skill or a language?
- Should sessions be online, in person nearby, or both? The answer decides whether matching depends on location.
- Does the product stop at introductions, or should it also handle scheduling, payment and the sessions themselves?
- Is this a standalone product, or should it build on Google products people already use around this need, such as Search, Meet or Calendar?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clear goal and a deliberately chosen segment on both the student side and the tutor side.
- Pain points specific to tutoring for each side, especially judging quality and fit, safety, and scheduling.
- A prioritized set of solutions with a defined first version, reasoned by impact and effort.
- A plan for the marketplace cold-start problem in the chosen segment.
- Success metrics built around completed and repeated sessions, with guardrails on safety and quality.
### Follow-up Questions
- Pairs who meet through the product often move off the platform after a few sessions to avoid fees. Would you try to prevent that, and how would it shape the business model?
- How would verification and safety work when the student is a minor and the tutor offers in-person sessions?
- After launch, tutors say they get too few requests while students say the good tutors are fully booked. What would you check, and what would you change?
Overview: A product sense prompt that asks you to design a product connecting students with tutors. It tests choosing a segment on both sides of a two-sided marketplace, addressing trust, fit and scheduling pain points, solving cold start, and defining success metrics with safety guardrails.
