Design, launch and scale an online product for live classes and coursework
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design an online learning product with two halves: a virtual classroom where classes meet live, and a learning management system that handles course materials, assignments, quizzes and grades. Once the design is clear, explain how you would launch the product and then scale it.
```hint The buyer is not the learner
In most education settings, the people who pick the product, the people who run classes in it and the people who learn in it are different. Decide whose problem the first version has to solve for the product to be adopted at all.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Which learners is this for: K-12 schools, universities, workplace training, or independent tutors selling courses?
- Is this a Google product that can build on existing Google tools such as video meetings, documents and sign-in, or a standalone product?
- Is it free, freemium, or sold to institutions?
- Which country or region launches first, given differences in school calendars, device access and connectivity?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A chosen education segment, its distinct users (learners, instructors, parents, administrators) and the needs of each.
- A design that spans both the live session and the work done outside it, prioritized into a first version with trade-offs stated.
- A launch plan: who adopts first, through which channel, and at what point in the school or training calendar.
- How the product scales: growth loops, the reliability demands of many classes starting at once, and privacy and safety rules for learners.
- Success metrics that track teaching and learning, not only logins, with guardrails.
### Follow-up Questions
- How would you show that students learn more with the product, not just that they log in more often?
- How would the design hold up for students who share a device or have a weak internet connection?
- If teachers love the product but the schools that pay for it see little value, what would you change?
Overview: A product design prompt asking for an online learning product that combines live virtual class sessions with management of courses, assignments and grades, plus a plan to launch and scale it. It tests segment choice across learners, teachers, parents and schools, prioritization, go-to-market strategy and success metrics.
