Designing a Grocery Store for Shoppers After the COVID-19 Pandemic
Company: Amazon
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
Design a supermarket for the period after the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic changed how people buy groceries, so the store should reflect what shoppers now need and worry about.
Explain what kind of store you would build and for whom, which problems you would solve, which ideas you would ship first and how you would judge whether the design works.
```hint Start from what the pandemic changed
List the shopping habits and worries the pandemic created, then ask which of them will last after the crisis and which shoppers feel them most. Let that, not a list of safety measures, drive the design.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Is this a physical store people walk into, an online grocery service, or a mix such as order-ahead with in-store pickup?
- What does "post" mean here: is the virus still circulating with no vaccine yet, or has the emergency passed and left lasting habits and worries behind?
- Is Amazon the operator, so the design can build on its existing grocery stores, delivery network and checkout technology, or is this a generic supermarket chain?
- What is the business goal: winning shoppers back from delivery, growing basket size, or protecting at-risk shoppers while staying profitable?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clear choice of store format and pandemic phase, and a stated business goal for the store.
- Shopper segments the pandemic affected in different ways, such as high-risk older shoppers, families doing a large stock-up trip and shoppers who switched to delivery, with a justified focus.
- Pain points mapped across the whole trip (planning, entering, finding items, checking out, pickup and returns) for the chosen segment.
- Prioritized solutions that mix store layout, operations and digital tools, with their cost and the risk of overbuilding for a temporary crisis weighed.
- Success metrics that capture shopper confidence and the store's economics, with guardrails.
### Follow-up Questions
- Which of your changes would you keep once health worries fade, and which would you wind down? What data would decide it?
- Your safety measures add labor and cap how many people the store can hold at once. How would you protect margins?
- Some shoppers got used to delivery during lockdowns and may never come back in. Would you try to win them back to the store or serve them online, and why?
Overview: A product design question that asks how to design a supermarket for the period after the COVID-19 pandemic. It tests choosing a store format and a shopper segment, mapping pandemic-driven pain points across the shopping trip, prioritizing store and digital solutions, and defining metrics that balance shopper confidence with store economics.
