Product Design for a Pet-Centered Social Network Serving Owners and Animal Fans

Design a new app for people who own pets and for people who simply love animals. The app is a social platform: members should be able to find and connect with each other and share what life with their animals is like. Explain whom you would build it for first, what problems it would solve for them, what the first version would include and how you would know it is working.
```hint Why not just post on a general feed
Pet owners can already post photos on general social networks. Look for the connections and help a pet owner cannot easily get there, and for the group of owners who need them most.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Is this a standalone app, or should it build on Facebook or Instagram, for example by reusing accounts, groups and friend connections?
- Besides owners and animal fans without pets, should shelters, rescues, breeders and pet-service providers be members too?
- Is the near-term goal engagement and community growth, or does the app need an early path to revenue?
- Is it for every kind of pet, or should it start with particular animals?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clear goal and a reasoned choice of one member segment among owners at different stages, animal fans, and pet organizations or businesses.
- Pain points specific to that segment, and why general social feeds and existing pet groups leave them unmet.
- A prioritized first version built around connecting and sharing, with its trade-offs stated.
- Success metrics that reflect real connections and sharing rather than raw time spent, with guardrails.
- Risks particular to this product: a cold start for local features, animal sales and scams, pet-health misinformation, and safety when members meet in person.
### Follow-up Questions
- Large pet communities already live in Facebook Groups and on Instagram. Why would people adopt a separate app, and how would you decide between a standalone app and a feature inside an existing one?
- How would you make the app useful to the first members in a city where almost no one else has joined?
- Members begin using the app to sell animals. Would you allow it, and how would you protect animal welfare?
Overview: A product sense interview question asking you to design a social app where pet owners and animal lovers connect and share life with their pets. It tests choosing a focus segment, identifying pain points, prioritizing a first version, defining engagement metrics with guardrails, and handling risks such as cold start and animal sales.
