Product Sense: An App to Support the Daily Work of Trucking Dispatchers
Company: Uber
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You are a product manager asked to create an app for dispatchers in trucking: the people who decide which driver and truck take each load, stay in touch with drivers on the road, and sort out whatever goes wrong between pickup and delivery. Decide which dispatchers you are building for and which of their problems the product should solve, propose and prioritize what goes into it, and explain how you would measure whether it succeeds.
```hint Sit in the dispatcher's chair
List everything a dispatcher handles over one working day, from the first truck coming free to the last delivery confirmed, and mark the steps that cost them the most time or money.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Which dispatchers are we serving: those running a carrier's own trucks, independent dispatchers who find loads for owner-operators, or staff at a freight broker?
- Roughly how large are the fleets: a handful of trucks or several hundred?
- Is this a standalone product, or part of an existing freight or logistics platform?
- Are drivers users of the product too, or should the dispatcher reach them through the calls and texts they already use?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- Dispatcher types compared, with one chosen and the reason for the choice
- A walk through that dispatcher's working day, with pain points ranked by how often they occur and what they cost the fleet
- Solutions weighed against explicit criteria, including how drivers, brokers and the tools dispatchers already rely on fit in, with a first version defined
- A primary success metric with guardrails, and the main risks to adoption with how to address them
### Follow-up Questions
- Dispatchers already juggle phone calls, spreadsheets and load boards. How do you get them to switch, and what would you integrate with rather than replace?
- Who pays for the product: the dispatcher, the carrier or the shipper, and how would you price it?
- How would the product need to change for a fleet ten times larger than the one you designed for?
Overview: A product design question that asks how you would build an app for dispatchers in trucking. It tests choosing which dispatchers to serve, walking through their working day to find the costliest pain points, scoping and prioritizing a first version, and setting success metrics, guardrails and an adoption plan.
