Reducing Sign-Up Friction and Drop-Off for a New Feature on a Household Device
Company: Google
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You are the product manager for a new feature on a device that people use in their homes. Before anyone can use the feature, they have to get through a sign-up flow. How would you optimize that flow? Cover how you would define a better flow, find where people struggle, decide what to change, and check that your changes worked.
```hint Where each step happens
A device in the home often has no keyboard, and the person setting it up may not be the only person who uses it. Think about where each step takes place (on the device, on a phone, by voice) and what moving between them costs the user.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- What is the device: does it have a screen, is it voice only, and is setup done through a companion phone app?
- What does signing up for this feature require: an account, linking an outside service, payment details, permissions such as microphone or location, or adding other household members?
- Is the flow already live with data on where people drop off, or are we designing it before launch?
- What counts as success for the business: more people finishing sign-up, more people using the feature afterward, or paid conversions?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clear goal for the flow that balances completion with whether people go on to use the feature.
- A step-by-step map of the funnel across device, phone and voice, with a measurement at every step.
- Friction specific to home devices: no keyboard, cross-device handoffs, connection and pairing failures, permission requests and shared households.
- Prioritized changes (removing, deferring or automating steps) validated by controlled experiments with guardrails.
- Trust and privacy at the moment of consent, and an accessible path for every user.
### Follow-up Questions
- Completion rose 15 points after you made account linking optional, but feature usage four weeks later fell. What happened, and what do you do?
- How would you design sign-up for a second person in the same household who wants their own profile?
- Testing looks fine, but half of the drop-off happens during the handoff from phone to device. How would you dig in?
Overview: A product improvement question about optimizing the sign-up flow for a new feature on a device used at home. It tests defining success beyond completion rate, mapping a funnel that spans the device and a phone, spotting home-device friction such as handoffs, permissions and shared households, and validating changes with experiments.
