School-Age Kids and Teens Social App: Segment Choice, Child Safety and MVP
Company: CRED
Role: Product Manager
Category: Product Design & Strategy
Difficulty: medium
Interview Round: Other
You are asked to design a social networking app for school students, anywhere from class 1 to class 12 (roughly ages 6 to 18). Decide who the product is for and which problems it solves, choose what the first version includes, and explain how you would keep young users safe and how you would measure success.
```hint Split the age range
A six-year-old and a seventeen-year-old use phones, friendships and apps in very different ways, and the rules that protect them differ too. Decide whether one product can serve the whole range, and what part parents and teachers play.
```
### Clarifying Questions
- Which market is this for? "Class 1 to 12" suggests Indian schools; should I design for India first, under its rules for children's data?
- Are we a new startup, an education company that already works with schools, or an existing social network adding a product for young users?
- Should the app connect students within their own school, or across schools around shared interests?
- Who pays, if anyone: parents, schools, or no one at launch?
### What a Strong Answer Covers
- A clear goal and a reasoned choice of age band and segment, given how differently younger children and teenagers use social products.
- The roles of parents, teachers and schools as gatekeepers, users or customers, and how that shapes onboarding and distribution.
- Pain points of the chosen segment mapped to features, prioritized into a focused first version.
- Child safety, privacy and well-being designed in from the start: consent, who can contact whom, moderation, data limits and time spent.
- Success metrics with safety guardrails, and a business model that fits the rules on marketing to children.
### Follow-up Questions
- A parent reports that an unknown adult messaged their 12-year-old through the app. What in your design should have prevented this, and what happens after the report?
- How would the experience change as a student moves from one age band to the next, and how would you verify ages in the first place?
- Most of the class already chats on a mainstream messaging app. Why would they move to yours?
Overview: A product design question asking how you would build a social networking app for school students from class 1 to class 12. It tests choosing an age band and segment, involving parents and schools, building child safety and privacy into the first version, and defining success metrics with safety guardrails.
